The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has graduated 31 new locomotive pilots as part of efforts to strengthen the workforce required to support the expansion of passenger and freight rail services across the country, Eko Hot Blog reports.
Speaking at the graduation ceremony, the Managing Director of the NRC, Dr. Kayode Opeifa, described locomotive pilots as critical to the ongoing transformation of Nigeria’s railway sector, saying they would play a vital role in improving operational efficiency, safety and service delivery.

Represented by the Director of Administration and Human Resources, Dr. Monsurat Omotayo, Opeifa said the graduates successfully completed more than one year of intensive theoretical and practical training designed to prepare them for operating modern railway systems.
He noted that the investment in human capital reflects the Corporation’s commitment to operational excellence and aligns with the Federal Government’s ongoing reforms aimed at expanding rail infrastructure, strengthening freight services and encouraging greater participation by state governments in railway development.
According to him, initiatives such as partnerships with state governments, the implementation of the Track Access Policy and the ongoing freight revolution are expected to create more opportunities for rail transportation nationwide.
He added that the newly certified locomotive pilots would play a key role in driving the reforms and supporting the future growth of the railway sector.
“Locomotive pilots will be at the centre of these initiatives and the future of railway transportation in Nigeria,” Opeifa said.
The NRC boss also assured the graduates, including two women, that the Corporation would continue to invest in their professional development by providing additional capacity-building opportunities and exposure to global best practices.
He said the initiative would further enhance safety, efficiency and service delivery as the Corporation continues to modernise Nigeria’s railway system.
