A striking bronze monument of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo has been unveiled at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife a tribute designed to preserve the memory of one of Nigeria’s most influential leaders.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the 15-foot structure, donated by renowned art philanthropist Prince Yemisi Shyllon, captures Awolowo in his SAN regalia and is valued at ₦120 million.

The unveiling ceremony drew academics, political leaders and admirers from within and outside the university community.
OAU Vice Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Bamire, described the statue as a powerful reminder of Awolowo’s commitment to education, leadership and public service. He praised Shyllon for investing in a legacy that aligns with OAU’s philosophy of learning and culture.
Shyllon, one of Africa’s most respected art collectors, said the donation was his personal tribute to Awolowo’s purposeful leadership.

He urged Nigerians to prioritise meaningful contributions over material pursuits, citing Awolowo’s achievements including free education, Cocoa House and early broadcast stations as examples of enduring impact.
Representing the Awolowo family, Dr. Olatokunbo Awolowo Dosumu thanked the university and Shyllon for immortalising her father’s legacy.
She encouraged students to draw inspiration from the ideals he lived for discipline, courage and selfless service.
