EKO HOT BLOG reports that Fr. Eya was returning from Enugu when he was ambushed by gunmen riding a motorcycle.
The incident occurred near the construction site of a Type C hospital project in the community.
Eyewitnesses said the attackers shot at the tyres of his vehicle, forcing it to a halt before they approached and fired multiple shots at him at close range.
Although initial reports hinted at a possible kidnapping, a community source dismissed the notion, insisting the killing appeared to be a planned execution.
“He was coming back from Enugu when they caught up with him close to the hospital construction site,” the source said.
“They shot out the tyres and when the car stopped, they moved closer and fired several shots directly at him. This doesn’t seem like a kidnapping at all.”
Fr. Eya, who hailed from Ugbaike in Enugu Ezike, Igbo-Eze North LGA, was said to be alone in the car at the time of the attack.
As of the time of filing this report, both the police and the Catholic Diocese of Nsukka were yet to issue official statements concerning the incident.
