On Monday, June 14, 2021, the Babajide Sanwo-Olu led administration of Lagos State once again made good on its promise of quality healthcare delivery following the commissioning of a 110-bed Maternal and Child Care Centre at the General Hospital, Epe.
The arrival of the Governor was heralded with rousing cheers and thunderous applause, as residents of the fish basket of Lagos thronged out en masse to catch a glimpse of their quintessential administrator.
Expressing his delight at the completion of the impressive edifice, Governor Sanwo-Olu appreciated stakeholders in service who worked assiduously to make the Epe MCC project a reality, describing the project as his administration’s unyielding desire to wage war against the surging menace of maternal and child mortality in the state.
“I feel greatly fulfilled to be in Epe to commission a fully equipped Maternal Child Center, a clear demonstration of this administration’s seriousness about the war against maternal and child mortality in Lagos State. In the last two years, we have shown great commitment to the improvement of maternal and child health in the State. This is the 4th in the series that we’re Commissioning. I urge all expectant and future mothers within Epe and its environs to make use of these facilities and avoid patronizing unregistered birth homes which may result in complications, leads to birth defects or loss of both the mother and the unborn child,” His Excellency stated.
Sanwo-Olu, who promised to continue investing in the abundance of indigenous talent spread across all spheres of human endeavour, promised to ensure that competent hands amongst the local community would be employed to fill the vacuum of employment opportunities necessitated by the launching of the facility. He also assured the completion of another top-notch health facility in Ketu-Ejinrin, the Oke-Oyinbo, Oke-Osho roads before the year runs out.
Earlier, the Hon Commissioner for Health, Professor Akin Abayomi disclosed to the Governor that in 3 weeks of operations, having been opened on 19th May 2021, the facility has recorded no death to the excitement of the gathering.
He further stated that 590 pregnant women have patronised the facility with the delivery of 100 babies, 630 paediatric cases all carried out with a staff strength of 20 nurses and 9 doctors who are dedicated to the Maternal and Child Center. He, however, promised to further reinforce the staff strength in the next two weeks with 20 more nurses and 10 doctors. This, he assured will drastically reduce the Maternal mortality indices in the State.
In his goodwill message, Hon Adedoyin Adesanya, the Chairman of Epe Local Government, promised to provide 20 housing units of accommodation for nurses and doctors that will be deployed to the facility just as he has done to officers of the Nigerian Police Force, Oke-Oyinbo, Epe Division. Hon Adesanya also pleaded for employment of indigenous medical practitioners, and appealed to the Governor to look into the menace of epileptic power supply.
Hon Abiodun Tobun, member representing Epe Constituency 1 at the Lagos State House of Assembly, immensely appreciated the Governor for taking up the project to completion and functional stage. The magnanimity of the Governor, he said, was responsible for the completion of the health facility having been abandoned for years.
The commissioning of the health edifice, which was part of programs lined up to mark the 2nd anniversary of the Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration, was brought to a close with the vote of thanks by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Dr Olusegun Ogboye. In his short address, he applauded the leadership of the Lagos State Government and other distinguished guests present. He however pleaded with the community to protect both health workers and facilities at all times as they are meant for the well being of the people.
