Nigeria’s political space converged in Abuja on Saturday as former President Olusegun Obasanjo and ex–Vice President Atiku Abubakar joined a wide array of national figures at a high-level leadership colloquium held in honour of former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the event, taking place at the Transcorp Hilton, Abuja, focused on conversations around leadership, democratic values and nation-building, while also reflecting on Tambuwal’s role in strengthening Nigeria’s legislative institutions.

The gathering attracted several past and serving leaders across party lines, highlighting the bipartisan appeal of the former Speaker.

Among those present were former Senate President and African Democratic Congress chairman, Senator David Mark, while Senate President Godswill Akpabio was represented by the Senate Minority Leader, Senator Abba Moro.
A number of former state governors also attended, including Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers, Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti, Aminu Masari of Katsina, Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom, as well as Ogun State’s former governors, Ibikunle Amosun and Otunba Gbenga Daniel. Former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Emeka Ihedioha, was equally in attendance.
The colloquium also drew respected voices from religious, legislative and policy circles. Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Matthew Hassan Kukah, joined former Speakers of the House, Patricia Etteh and Yakubu Dogara, alongside Senator Eyinnaya Abaribe, former APC National Chairman Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, and the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Musa Dangiwa.

Prominent scholars and public intellectuals present included political economist Professor Pat Utomi, former INEC Chairman Professor Attahiru Jega, Nigeria’s former UN envoy Professor Tijjani Bande, and Professor Ibrahim Gambari, who previously served as Chief of Staff to late President Muhammadu Buhari.

Tambuwal represented Kebbe/Tambuwal Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives for four terms, rose to become Speaker, later served two terms as Governor of Sokoto State, and currently represents Sokoto South as a senator.
Participants described the event as both a tribute and a platform for deep reflection on the quality of leadership needed to strengthen Nigeria’s democracy in the years ahead.
