According to police spokesperson SP Nafiu Abubakar, the arrest followed a formal complaint made at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Birnin Kebbi, on September 4, 2025. Investigations revealed that the suspects had, between 2024 and 2025, unlawfully entered the residence of one Hajiya Rabi and stolen several gold items belonging to her daughter, Hajiya Amina Hassan Bello, and other family members.

The stolen items included five gold necklaces, nine bangles, and four rings all weighing approximately 782.7 grams. These were allegedly sold off by one of the suspects, a correctional officer identified as Ibrahim Abubakar, who has since confessed to his involvement.
Abubakar reportedly sold the gold to four individuals: Sa’adu Ibrahim Darhami and Hamza Ahmad, both from Sokoto State; Nasiru Sani from Birnin Kebbi; and Tasi’u Umar from Zauro. Another suspect, Ibrahim Usman Oroji, allegedly collected ₦2.5 million as his share after selling part of the gold.
In addition, one Mustapha Hassan is accused of laundering the proceeds by purchasing two plots of land in Birnin Kebbi metropolis using the stolen funds.
Recovered items so far include two gold bangles, an iPhone 16, a Samsung Galaxy Ultra, a Samsung Flip phone, and a Haojue motorcycle. The police stated that efforts are ongoing to recover the remaining stolen items and arrest other suspects linked to the crime.
SP Abubakar affirmed that the command is determined to pursue every lead and ensure that all perpetrators are brought to justice, adding that the case remains under active investigation.
