EKO HOT BLOG reports that issues with the Bi-Modal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) surfaced during the election, particularly concerning elderly voters.

Miss Angela Oshogwe, the Presiding Officer at Polling Unit 19 in Ward 11, Olamojuba, Ondo West Local Government Area, reported that the BVAS struggled to recognize the faces of some elderly individuals, leaving many unable to cast their votes after prolonged waits.

Oshogwe revealed that she had raised the matter with the relevant authorities and noted that the issue seemed to affect multiple polling units. She expressed hope that the problem would be resolved before voting ended.

In response, Rotimi Oyekanmi, Chief Press Secretary to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman, acknowledged the challenges but described them as limited and manageable.

“We are aware that in very limited cases, some elderly voters couldn’t be accredited by the BVAS on the first attempt. However, subsequent attempts resolved the issue,” Oyekanmi stated.

He emphasized that technical issues were anticipated in a major off-season election like this and assured the public that INEC had prepared adequately to address any challenges. Oyekanmi also highlighted that the BVAS was performing satisfactorily across the majority of the 3,933 polling units in the state.

The Ondo governorship election continues to unfold, with various reports and outcomes being closely monitored.
