Former Osun State Governor and National Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Rauf Aregbesola, suffered a defeat at his polling unit as the All Progressives Congress (APC) secured the highest number of votes there during Saturday’s governorship election.
Eko Hot Blog gathered that results declared at Polling Unit 001, Cooperative Building Junction, Isare, Ward 08, in Ilesa East Local Government Area, showed that APC candidate Bola Oyebamiji won the unit with 256 votes.
The Accord Party candidate and incumbent governor, Ademola Adeleke, came second after receiving 43 votes, while ADC candidate Najeem Salaam recorded 13 votes.
Aregbesola had earlier cast his ballot at the polling unit in his hometown of Ilesa, making the result a setback for the former governor and the ADC leadership in the state.
The development also represents an early advantage for the APC in an election where the party is challenging the incumbent government and other major contenders.
Aregbesola served as Osun governor between 2010 and 2018 before later becoming Minister of Interior. He was previously a prominent APC figure before joining the ADC.
Meanwhile, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has continued uploading results from polling units as the collation process progresses across the state.
Voters in the 30 local government areas of Osun State participated in Saturday’s election to choose the governor who will lead the state for the next four years.
The major contenders in the election include Adeleke of the Accord Party, APC candidate Oyebamiji and ADC candidate Salaam.
