Thailand officially swore in Paetongtarn Shinawatra as prime minister on Friday, concluding a tumultuous political period that saw her predecessor ousted and the main opposition party dissolved.

Paetongtarn, the daughter of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, took the oath of office in a private ceremony with King Maha Vajiralongkorn around 6:15 pm (1115 GMT), making her the country’s youngest prime minister at 38 years old.

She briefly addressed reporters before departing Government House.

In a televised speech, the king congratulated Paetongtarn and her new cabinet, expressing confidence in their ability to fulfill their duties.

Paetongtarn succeeds Srettha Thavisin from her Pheu Thai party, who was removed from office by the Constitutional Court in mid-August for appointing a cabinet minister with a criminal record.
