EKO HOT BLOG reports that political parties have urged the National Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to alter the timetable for the 2023 elections to allow for robust participation.
The parties specifically requested that the deadline for the conduct of party primaries be extended by two months.
INEC, in line with the new Electoral Act, fixed the deadline for the conduct of primaries by political parties for June 3.
It would be recalled that INEC had told parties that it won’t shift deadline for primaries.
INEC had slated April 4 to June 3 for election of flag bearers of all political parties for the 2023 elections.
In its timetable and schedule of activities released in February for the 2023 General Election, the commission had slated April 4 to June 3 for the election of flag bearers of all political parties for the 2023 elections.
With about some weeks to the deadline, the nation’s leading political parties, APC and PDP, appear not ready for their primaries.
While APC is still selling the nomination forms to aspirants, the PDP is screening eligible aspirants.
The two major parties are reportedly lobbying INEC to shift the dates.
