The artwork features the popular Bible verse John 3:16 written in Roman numerals — “III: XVI” — accompanied by a voice-over reciting the scripture, a verse widely regarded as the heart of the Christian message.

Reacting to the buzz generated by the post, Okonkwo took to Facebook on Sunday, noting that while some believers focused on debating the tattoo, many overlooked the fact that the Gospel message had reached millions within 24 hours through blogs and social media platforms.
“My religious brothers and sisters were busy judging over tattoo; they didn’t notice that the gospel (John 3:16) was preached to millions in 24hrs by almost all blogs,” he wrote, adding that he would address the issue in detail later.
He also invited followers to join him for his praise party and thanksgiving service at DCC Lagos on both the mainland and island, promising an atmosphere of celebration filled with music, food and praise.
The tattoo sparked mixed reactions online, with some social media users questioning whether it was appropriate for a pastor to mark his body.
Critics cited biblical passages warning against body markings, while others argued that such actions could confuse church members.

However, a section of his followers defended the move, describing it as a creative expression of faith and applauding what they saw as a modern approach to evangelism. Several supporters praised the pastor for using unconventional means to draw attention to scripture.
Known for his contemporary style of ministry and youth-oriented teachings on relationships and marriage, Okonkwo continued to share moments from his birthday celebration, joking about “celebrating the big 50.”
As the debate continued, the pastor urged calm, assuring followers that he would address all concerns after the weekend festivities.
By framing the tattoo as evangelism rather than rebellion, Okonkwo has turned a personal milestone into a broader conversation about faith, expression and modern-day ministry.
