Poland Tightens Student Visa Rules Amid Scandal Over System Abuse
Poland has implemented stricter regulations for student visas in response to a recent “student visa scandal” that exposed abuse of the visa system.
The scandal revealed that Poland had been admitting large numbers of international students without adequately verifying their academic qualifications.
According to Schengen News, the Polish government had been allowing tens of thousands of third-country students to enter the country without proper checks on their eligibility.
While Polish authorities require foreign students to verify their high school diplomas, many universities were found to have inconsistently enforced this requirement EKO HOT BLOG gathered.
In light of these findings, Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski announced that student visas will now only be issued to individuals with verified high school diplomas.
This policy change follows investigations that uncovered instances where foreign nationals were obtaining student visas without the necessary academic qualifications and using them to work illegally in the Schengen Area.

Sikorski emphasized that the new regulations are designed to ensure that student visas are granted only to those who genuinely intend to study in Poland.
“The misuse of student visas has become a significant issue, with many visa holders failing to attend the universities that facilitated their entry,” Sikorski explained.
Further reports from TravelBiz highlight that these updated regulations do not introduce new legal measures but instead reinforce existing ones.
The Polish government is committed to preventing visa fraud and ensuring that the visa system is not exploited for economic gain.

This crackdown on student visa misuse is part of a broader effort to address corruption within Poland’s visa system, which includes a cash-for-visas scandal involving the previous government.
Several arrests have been made, including that of a former deputy foreign minister accused of facilitating work visas in exchange for bribes.
By enforcing stricter entry requirements, Poland aims to protect the integrity of its education system, reduce visa fraud, and ensure that only legitimate students are granted visas.
