The President of the Association of Resident Doctors, FCTA, Dr. George Ebong, has emphasized that the only way to bring significant improvement to Nigeria’s public healthcare system is for government officials to start using local hospitals.

He believes this move will compel the government to prioritize the development and proper funding of public health facilities.

Back in 2019, the House of Representatives debated a bill aimed at regulating medical trips abroad for public officials and strengthening local healthcare services. However, the bill failed to pass its third reading.

Many lawmakers opposed it, claiming that restricting medical tourism would infringe on the rights of public officials to seek healthcare wherever they choose.

As a result, the opportunity to address the challenges facing Nigeria’s health sector was missed.

Appearing on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme, Dr. Ebong insisted that encouraging government officials to use local hospitals is the most effective way to spark a much-needed revolution in the healthcare sector.

He stated, “If we are truly serious about fixing the healthcare system in this country, then every government official should be required to use public hospitals. Imagine the ministers getting treated at Wuse General Hospital or the Senate President receiving care at Maitama Hospital.”

Dr. Ebong also pointed out that the example set by leaders matters greatly. He argued that when top government officials depend on the same healthcare system as ordinary citizens, they will experience firsthand the poor state of these facilities and be forced to take immediate action to address the problems.

He further highlighted the repeated medical trips of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who frequently sought treatment abroad during his tenure, as a glaring example of the lack of confidence in the local healthcare system.

Unfortunately, the trend continues under the current administration of President Bola Tinubu, who has also traveled overseas for medical reasons. Dr. Ebong expressed concern that without deliberate action to reverse this pattern, Nigeria’s healthcare system will remain underfunded and neglected, leaving millions of citizens to suffer.
