The Police Service Commission (PSC) has approved the appointment of nine new Commissioners of Police (CPs) for various State Commands, cautioning them against allowing Tactical Units to overshadow established Police Departments.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that in a statement by PSC spokesperson Ikechukwu Ani, the Commission expressed concerns over the misuse of Tactical Units by previous State Commissioners, which had rendered key police departments ineffective.

The PSC emphasized that these specialized units, often headed by Deputy Commissioners of Police, must not replace the core functions of recognized departments within State Command Headquarters.

During an interactive session with the newly appointed Commissioners, the Commission reiterated the need to strengthen existing police departments and ensure their efficiency.

The newly appointed CPs are:

Ibrahim Balarabe Maikaba (Kano) – CP Zamfara
Breret Emmanuel Simon (Plateau) – CP Taraba
Christopher Ado Emmanuel (Niger) – CP Yobe
Olusegun Eyitayo Omosayin (Ondo) – CP Cross River
Adamu Abdullahi Elleman (Jigawa), former Head of IGP Monitoring Unit – CP Niger
Sani Omolori Aliyu (Kogi) – CP Bauchi
Bello Shehu (Gombe) – CP Katsina
Saka Adewale Ajao (Ogun) – CP FCT
Ojo Adekimi (Ekiti) – CP Kwara

The newly appointed CPs underwent a rigorous selection process led by retired Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Taiwo Lakanu, who represents the Police at the Commission.

PSC Chairman, DIG Hashimu Argungu (rtd), urged the officers to ensure Tactical Units operate strictly within their mandate, stressing that they should support—not replace—the functions of recognized Police Departments.

DIG Lakanu also advised the new CPs to foster trust within their Commands, engage with local communities, and collaborate with key stakeholders, including youth groups, traditional rulers, and the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA). He further cautioned against the creation of unnecessary squads, urging them to work closely with established police departments for more effective law enforcement.
