Cyril Ramaphosa has called on Nigerians and other foreign nationals living in South Africa to obey the country’s laws and respect its cultural values amid rising tensions involving migrants.
Speaking during a Freedom Day address broadcast on SABC News, Eko Hot Blog gathered that the president urged legally resident foreigners to conduct themselves responsibly and in line with local traditions, just as they would expect in their home countries.

Ramaphosa reaffirmed South Africa’s commitment to international cooperation and human rights but stressed that immigration laws would be enforced where necessary.
He also encouraged citizens to rely on legal processes in dealing with undocumented migrants.
His remarks come against the backdrop of recent protests and incidents targeting foreign nationals in cities such as Durban, Cape Town, and parts of KwaZulu-Natal, where unrest has included looting and violence.
In response to growing concerns, Nigeria’s acting ambassador to South Africa, Alexander Ajayi, said the situation was under control and dismissed claims that Nigerians were facing widespread attacks.
He described the incidents as isolated and urged calm, noting that authorities from both countries were working together to maintain safety.
Similarly, the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission issued an advisory urging Nigerians in South Africa to remain law-abiding, avoid confrontations, and stay updated through local media.
The commission also encouraged business owners to take precautions and confirmed that the Nigerian Consulate in Johannesburg remains active, coordinating with local authorities.
Meanwhile, Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, is engaging her South African counterpart as part of diplomatic efforts to address the situation and ensure the safety of Nigerian citizens.
