Reps Establishes Committee to Supervise Emergency Rule in Rivers State

- The committee set up by the House of Representatives will oversee the implementation of the emergency rule in Rivers State
- The committee will be led by Leader of the House Julius Ihonvbere
- The committee is scheduled to be inaugurated on Tuesday, April 15, 2025
In response to President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, the House of Representatives announced the formation of an Ad-Hoc Committee on Sunday.
Eko Hot Blog reports that this committee will oversee the implementation of the emergency rule and is scheduled to be inaugurated on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, by Speaker Abbas Tajudeen.

The committee will be led by Leader of the House, Julius Ihonvbere (APC, Edo), as chairman, with Ali Isa JC (PDP, Gombe) serving as the Deputy Chairman. The Chief of Staff to the Speaker, Jake Dan-Azumi, has been appointed as the Head of Secretariat.
This development follows the ratification of the emergency rule by both chambers of the National Assembly, which has faced criticism for removing a democratically elected governor.
President Tinubu cited Section 305 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and appointed Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas as the Sole Administrator of Rivers State for an initial six-month period.
Other members of the committee include former deputy speaker, weIdris Wase (APC, Plateau), Isiaka Ibrahim (APC, Ogun)– Member, Aliyu Betara (APC, Borno), Sada Soli (APC, Katsina), James Faleke (APC, Lagos), Igariwey Enwo (PDP, Ebonyi), Shehu Rijau (APC, Niger) Wole Oke (PDP)
Others are Akarachi Amadi (APC, Imo), Patrick Umoh (APC, Akwa Ibom), James Barka (PDP, Adamawa), Alex Egbona (APC, Cross River), Isa Anka (APC, Zamfara), Amos Daniel (PDP, Kaduna), Erhiatake Ibori-Suenu (APC, Delta), Onuh Blessing (APC, Benue) and Fatima Talba (APC, Yobe).
According to the statement the committee was created, “In line with Section 5 of the State of Emergency (Rivers State) Proclamation, 2025, and pursuant to Section 11(4) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the House has constituted a dedicated Ad-Hoc Committee to monitor implementation and ensure that governance in the State remains within the bounds of constitutionalism and rule of law”.
