His remarks come shortly after a deadly assault on military personnel in Benisheikh, along the Maiduguri–Damaturu road in Borno State. The attack, linked to insurgent groups in the North-East, claimed the life of Oseni Braimah and other soldiers.

Agbese noted that the incident reflects the continuing complexity of Nigeria’s security challenges, pointing out that the country is still dealing with insurgency, banditry, abductions, and other forms of violence in different regions.
He said the legislature would keep defence and security at the forefront of its priorities, with attention on better funding, improved welfare for troops, and stronger intelligence systems to support operations.
The lawmaker also highlighted the need for proper monitoring of defence expenditures to ensure accountability and effective use of public funds. He added that releasing funds promptly for essential military equipment would significantly improve the fight against insecurity.

Agbese further called on Nigerians to support security agencies by remaining alert and sharing credible information, stressing that national security requires joint effort beyond the military alone.
He expressed confidence that stronger coordination between the National Assembly, the executive, and security agencies would help the country overcome its current challenges and achieve lasting peace.
