EKO HOT BLOG reports that the development was disclosed by his media aide, Muyiwa Adekeye, in a post shared on his 𝕏 account.
According to Adekeye, security operatives approached El-Rufai shortly after he landed and attempted to take him into custody. The former governor reportedly declined to accompany them, insisting on a formal invitation before honouring any request.
Adekeye stated that the operatives subsequently seized El-Rufai’s passport from one of his aides.
The statement read, “Security agents today attempted to arrest Malam Nasir elrufai as he arrived on a flight from Cairo. Malam El-Rufai declined to follow them without a formal Invitation. They however snatched his passport from an aide.”
A video of the incident was also shared online.
The incident comes amid heightened political tension. El-Rufai had earlier alleged that the All Progressives Congress led Federal Government might be plotting his arrest.
The former governor, who recently left the APC and is now aligned with the opposition African Democratic Congress, made the claim during an interview with BBC Hausa.
He also alleged that certain politicians were being pressured to either defect to the ruling party or remain within its fold.
El-Rufai, who has intensified his criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s administration and the APC, said although he had not been arrested at the time, some of his associates had already been detained.
