South Korean Man Convicted For Dodging Military Service By Gaining Weight
A South Korean court has convicted a man of attempting to dodge mandatory military service by intentionally gaining weight, according to local media reports.
The 26-year-old deliberately began binge eating before his draft physical, a judge in Seoul revealed. His obesity classification allowed him to secure a non-combat role at a government agency instead of active military service.

In South Korea, all able-bodied men over the age of 18 are required to serve at least 18 months in the military.

Initially deemed fit for combat during a preliminary physical exam, the defendant’s weight had soared to over 102 kilograms (225 pounds, 16 stone) by the final examination last year, classifying him as heavily obese.
The friend accused of aiding the scheme denied the charges, claiming he never believed the defendant would actually follow through, the Korea Herald added.
