Lagos State officials are defending their ban on single-use styrofoam, with the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, stating on his X (formerly Twitter) account that the decision was based on public health and environmental protection, not politics.
Eko Hot Blog reports that Wahab acknowledged that the ban, which was first announced in January 2024, was unpopular and faced resistance.

However, he insisted that the government’s decision was based on “irrefutable research” showing that styrofoam clogs drainage systems, pollutes water, and contaminates the food chain.

The Commissioner thanked Lagos residents who have adopted eco-friendly alternatives and credited their efforts with helping to reduce flooding, especially during the prolonged 2025 rainy season.
He emphasized that achieving a flood-free and sustainable Lagos requires both the government and its citizens to work together.
The ban on styrofoam and other single-use plastics in Lagos has been a long-standing issue, driven by years of advocacy from environmental and public health groups.
To enforce the ban, the government has announced it will seal any market or store found with the prohibited items, and offenders will be prosecuted according to state environmental laws.
