Speaking on behalf of the family, Abubakar Mohammed said the deceased fell ill several months ago and underwent surgery at the urology centre in September. According to him, the operation was intended to improve her health, but she began experiencing intense abdominal pain shortly after the procedure.
He explained that Umar repeatedly returned to the hospital over the next four months to complain about the persistent pain, but was allegedly given only pain relief medications without comprehensive medical examinations to identify the root cause of her condition.
The family claimed that it was not until two days before her death that detailed tests and scans were conducted, which reportedly revealed that a pair of surgical scissors had been left inside her body during the earlier surgery.
They said plans were being made for corrective surgery following the discovery, but her condition worsened rapidly before the procedure could be carried out, leading to her death in the early hours of Tuesday.

Reacting to the incident, the Kano State Hospitals Management Board expressed deep regret over Umar’s death and extended condolences to her family.
In a statement issued by the board’s spokesperson, Samira Suleiman, the Executive Secretary of the board, Dr. Mansur Mudi Nagoda, directed an immediate and thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident at the Abubakar Imam Urology Centre.
The board assured the public that the probe would be transparent, impartial, and professional, adding that appropriate action would be taken in line with existing regulations if any form of negligence is established.
“Patient safety remains our utmost priority, and the board is committed to upholding the highest standards of healthcare delivery in Kano State,” the statement said.
The family described the incident as a serious breach of medical ethics and patient safety, calling on the Kano State Government and relevant regulatory authorities to ensure accountability and justice for the late Aishatu Umar.
