Auwalu admitted killing Fatima Abubakar, who was his uncle’s daughter, along with her six children, but claimed he acted on the directive of a herbalist and traditional healer identified as Thomas.
According to him, the herbalist gave him incense and instructed him to continue carrying out similar crimes.
The defendant also told the court that his two co-defendants, Isyaku Yakubu Chobe and Yakubu Dayyabu, had no involvement in the killings.

He alleged that he only implicated them after being subjected to torture while in police custody.
Both the prosecution and defence presented witnesses during Wednesday’s proceedings.
Justice Saminu subsequently adjourned the matter until July 21, 2026, for the continuation of the trial.
The incident occurred on January 17, 2026, in Dorayi Chiranchi, Kano State, where Fatima Abubakar and her six children were found dead in their home.
Following investigations, police arrested Auwalu alongside the two other suspects.
The trio were initially arraigned before a Magistrates’ Court in February on charges bordering on conspiracy, culpable homicide, robbery and rape before the case was transferred to the High Court after a review by the Directorate of Public Prosecutions.
At the High Court, the defendants were arraigned on a nine-count charge. While Auwalu admitted responsibility for the killings, the two other defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges.
