Tax evasion: Jose Mourinho accepts 1 year prison sentence
Former Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has accepted a one-year prison sentence for evading tax while in Spain. The Portuguese tactician spent three years in charge of Real Madrid between 2010 and 2013 and won a Spanish league title.
He was however found guilty of defrauding the Spanish government during his stay at the club but will not be serving the punishment because he is a first offender under the law in the country.
According to the Mirror quoting Spanish outlet El Pais, Mourinho was at the Provincial Court on Tuesday to accept the sanction.
The former Chelsea and Inter Milan boss has been commanded to pay a fine of more than €3 million. His offences related to undeclared income around image rights while he was managing Real Madrid in 2011-2012.
The Portuguese tactician spent three years at the Santiago Bernabeu and won three titles for Los Blancos during his reign at the club, but failed to remit £2.9 million to the Spanish authorities. According to the Sun citing newspaper El Mundo, Mourinho has accepted wrongdoing and has been sentenced to a one year jail term.
