The Lagos State Government has implemented extensive safety and infrastructure upgrades at the Odan House Officers’ Residence, three years after the death of medical doctor, Vwaere Diaso, in a lift accident.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, disclosed this in a statement shared on his official X account on Monday, reaffirming the government’s commitment to ensuring that such a tragedy never happens again.

According to Abayomi, the state government immediately decommissioned the faulty lift following the incident and commenced a comprehensive refurbishment of the 10-storey House Officers’ Residence.
He said construction firm Julius Berger was engaged to carry out the renovation, while Kresta Laurel was contracted to install brand-new elevators in the building.
The commissioner revealed that the lift installation has been completed, although the elevators will only be commissioned after all renovation works have been concluded to protect the new facilities and guarantee the highest safety standards.
“Three years after the tragic loss of Dr. Vwaere Diaso, Lagos State remains steadfast in its commitment to ensuring that such a tragedy never happens again. We deeply value the lives of our medical professionals and every Lagosian,” Abayomi said.
He also disclosed that the government has strengthened the management of the facility by deploying a senior official of the Lagos State Health Service Commission to oversee its operations pending the appointment of a permanent facility manager.
In addition, the state has adopted stricter operational standards in line with the Lagos State Safety Commission’s guidelines for lift operations and facility management.
Abayomi explained that the renovation is being carried out in phases because the residence remains occupied by doctors working at the Lagos Island General Hospital, Lagos Island Maternity Hospital and Massey Street Children’s Hospital.
According to him, construction is progressing from the top floor downward, allowing doctors to move back into completed apartments as work advances.
Following a recent inspection of the project, the commissioner expressed satisfaction with the quality of work, noting that some resident doctors had already returned to the renovated upper floors.
Dr. Vwaere Diaso died in August 2023 after a faulty elevator at the House Officers’ Residence in General Hospital, Odan, Lagos Island, crashed while she was inside, triggering nationwide outrage and renewed calls for improved safety standards in public health facilities.
