In a statement issued in Abakaliki and jointly signed by the Deputy President General of the faction, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, and the National Spokesman, Thompson Ohia, the group said the decision followed wide consultations with Southeast political leaders, Imeobi, and Nzukoumunna.
The statement noted that the most viable platform for an Igbo presidency lies within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2035, should the party’s zoning arrangement be reviewed. It further identified the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, as the leading figure from the region with the strongest chance of emerging president when the opportunity arises.
According to the group, although several prominent Igbo leaders including Peter Obi, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, Pius Anyim, Governor Hope Uzodinma, Governor Chukwuma Soludo, and Rochas Okorocha are capable of leading Nigeria, Umahi stands out as the region’s best chance in 2035.
“Ohanaeze Ndigbo finds it paramount to convey a forthright and compelling message not only to Ndigbo but to the Nigerian populace. We assert that the goal of achieving an Igbo presidency is realizable in 2035. Following extensive consultations, we have reached a unanimous decision that the Southeast will not field presidential candidates in 2027 against the incumbent President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” the statement read.
The group also pledged full support for Tinubu’s re-election bid, projecting that 95 percent of Igbo votes would go to him in 2027.
While listing an array of potential presidential aspirants from the Southeast such as Ken Nnamani, Orji Uzor Kalu, Chimaroke Nnamani, and others, the organisation stressed that Umahi remains the most qualified, citing his records as former governor, Southeast Governors’ Forum chairman, senator, and current minister.
Ohanaeze further argued that power is likely to return to the North after Tinubu’s second term, making 2035 the historic opportunity for the Southeast to produce Nigeria’s first Igbo president.
