President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has urged the United Nations to embark on sweeping reforms or risk sliding into irrelevance in the face of today’s global challenges.
Eko Hot Blog reports that while addressing the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Wednesday, the president represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima called for a more inclusive and responsive multilateral system.

Tinubu’s appeal focused on four key demands, beginning with Nigeria’s insistence on securing a permanent seat on the UN Security Council.
“Nigeria must have a permanent seat at the UN Security Council. This should take place as part of a wider process of institutional reform.
The United Nations will recover its relevance only when it reflects the world as it is, not as it was,” he said.
The president underscored Nigeria’s evolution from a colony of 20 million people, once excluded from critical global decisions, to a sovereign nation of over 236 million citizens projected to soon become the world’s third most populous country with one of the youngest and most dynamic populations.

Tinubu also voiced frustration with the slow pace of progress on global priorities, from nuclear disarmament to Security Council restructuring, and pressed for “radical reforms” to the global financial system.
He specifically called for new mechanisms to ease the sovereign debt crisis crippling developing economies.
On humanitarian crises, Tinubu condemned the ongoing violence in the Middle East and other conflict zones, describing them as “stains on our collective humanity” that demand urgent international action.
