- Transport operators must be properly identified, documented, and possess valid NIN registration.
- Commercial motorcycle operators are prohibited from operating beyond 10:00 p.m. as part of security measures.
- Transport union leaders pledged support for policies aimed at improving security and revenue generation.
As part of ongoing efforts to enhance security, improve accountability, and boost internally generated revenue, the Ibeju-Lekki Local Government has engaged leaders of commercial transport unions across the council area on a new set of operational guidelines aimed at strengthening monitoring and regulation within the sector.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the strategic meeting, convened by the Supervisor for Market and Revenue, Hon. Ahmed Ajibola Elemoro, brought together chairmen of Tricycle operators, Motorcycle (Okada) units, and the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) operating across Ibeju-Lekki.
According to Hon. Elemoro, the meeting was held to communicate important directives from the Executive Chairman of Ibeju-Lekki Local Government, Hon. Abdullahi Sesan Olowa, as part of the administration’s commitment to maintaining security and promoting orderly transportation activities within the local government area.
A major highlight of the meeting was the directive that all unit chairmen must ensure the proper identification, registration, and documentation of operators under their respective jurisdictions. The move is expected to strengthen security profiling and make it easier for authorities to track operators when necessary.
The local government also announced that commercial motorcycle operators would no longer be permitted to operate beyond 10:00 p.m., a measure introduced to curb security breaches and reduce criminal activities often associated with late-night movements.
In addition, the use of officially approved aprons by operators was made compulsory as part of efforts to establish a clear means of identification and distinguish registered operators from unauthorized individuals.
Stakeholders were equally informed that possession of a valid National Identification Number (NIN) has become mandatory for all commercial transport operators within the local government.
The council further directed that foreign nationals engaged in commercial transportation activities must present themselves at the Immigration Office located within the Local Government Secretariat for proper documentation, profiling, and verification.
Speaking during the engagement, Hon. Elemoro emphasized the importance of compliance with government regulations, describing revenue generation as a critical component of development and effective service delivery.
“Revenue remains the engine room of development. When residents and operators comply with government policies and fulfill their obligations, it becomes easier for government to provide essential services and execute projects that benefit the people,” he stated.
He appealed to transport union leaders to support the administration’s efforts by ensuring that members comply with all directives and security measures.
The Supervisor reaffirmed the commitment of the Hon. Abdullahi Sesan Olowa-led administration to protecting lives and property, strengthening security architecture, and creating a conducive environment for businesses and residents across Ibeju-Lekki.
Responding on behalf of the transport unions, the various unit chairmen commended the local government for carrying them along in the decision-making process and pledged their full support for the implementation of the directives.
They assured the council of their readiness to cooperate with security agencies and relevant authorities in promoting safety, orderliness, and sustainable development throughout the local government area.
The meeting ended with a renewed commitment from all stakeholders to work together towards building a safer, more organized, and economically prosperous Ibeju-Lekki.
