The Trump administration has appointed border enforcement chief Tom Homan to oversee U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations in Minnesota, following growing unrest after the fatal shootings of two U.S. citizens by federal agents in Minneapolis.
Eko Hot Blog reports that President Donald Trump announced the decision on Monday, saying Homan would report directly to him as the administration seeks to restore order and tighten control over immigration enforcement activities in the state.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Homan would also coordinate with officials investigating alleged large-scale fraud schemes in Minnesota, alongside ongoing immigration enforcement operations.
The move comes amid mounting public outrage and protests triggered by the killing of Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old intensive care nurse, who was shot dead by federal agents on Saturday. Pretti’s death followed a similar incident earlier in January, when Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old mother of three, was fatally shot during an encounter with ICE officers.
Both shootings occurred in daylight, were captured on video, and have intensified scrutiny of federal immigration agents’ use of force.
The incidents have drawn sharp criticism from Democrats, civil rights groups and business leaders, while prompting calls for de-escalation in Minneapolis.
Although senior administration officials initially defended the agents’ actions, video evidence circulating online has contradicted some official claims, further fuelling public distrust. Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara later confirmed that Pretti was a lawful gun owner and was holding a phone, not a weapon at the start of the encounter.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem welcomed Homan’s deployment, describing it as “good news for peace, safety and accountability” in the state. She said his experience would strengthen federal efforts to remove “violent criminal illegal aliens” and support fraud investigations.
Trump also disclosed that Minnesota Governor Tim Walz had contacted him to discuss cooperation. According to the president, both leaders agreed to work together on identifying criminal suspects, marking a notable shift in tone after months of tension between the White House and Minnesota’s Democratic leadership.
The development comes as Trump faces declining approval ratings on immigration and growing criticism over federal enforcement tactics. Investigations into the Minneapolis shootings are ongoing, as pressure mounts on the administration to clarify rules of engagement and rebuild public confidence in immigration enforcement.
