Trump Names Elise Stefanik As UN Ambassador Nominee
President-elect Donald Trump has nominated Republican Rep. Elise Stefanik as his pick for U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations.
In a statement, Trump expressed his confidence in Stefanik, saying, “I am honoured to nominate Chairwoman Elise Stefanik to serve in my Cabinet as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. Elise is an incredibly strong, tough, and smart America First fighter.” This announcement confirms earlier reports by CNN that Stefanik had been offered the position.

The New York congresswoman, currently the fourth-ranking House Republican, has been a staunch ally of Trump and a key fundraiser for the GOP.
Stefanik’s selection signals a more confrontational approach toward the United Nations, aligning with her past criticism of the international body, particularly regarding its stance on Israel. Last month, she suggested that the U.S. should consider a “complete reassessment” of its funding to the UN if the Palestinian Authority continues to push for a move to revoke Israel’s UN membership.
As the House Republican Conference chair, Stefanik has been a consistent and vocal supporter of Trump. Her forceful performance during his 2019 impeachment hearings helped her rise to prominence as a “Republican star,” a label Trump himself endorsed. Stefanik also backed Trump after his 2020 defeat, challenging the certification of Joe Biden’s win in the House and supporting Trump’s baseless claims of election fraud.
Initially a critic of Donald Trump during his 2016 presidential campaign and in the early years of his presidency, Elise Stefanik eventually transitioned from skeptic to staunch defender. She attributed this shift in part to Trump’s popularity in her upstate New York district.
As Trump campaigned for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, Stefanik was among the potential vice-presidential candidates, a position she actively pursued. She told newsmen earlier this year that she was “proud to be a top surrogate” and would “proudly serve in a future Trump administration.”

Stefanik succeeded Liz Cheney as the GOP conference chair in May 2021 after Cheney publicly denounced Trump’s election falsehoods. She serves on multiple important committees, including the Armed Services Committee and the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. Stefanik also made headlines last year with her campaign against college leaders she felt did not adequately denounce antisemitism during a House hearing.
In a social media post on Saturday, Trump confirmed that he would not be inviting former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley back for the role, despite her past service in his administration and subsequent rivalry with him in the Republican primaries. Haley, the former South Carolina governor, eventually endorsed Trump after dropping out of the race.
