EKO HOT BLOG reports that the move has placed the school under a rare financial monitoring status due to concerns over its finances and civil rights compliance.
On Friday, the U.S. Department of Education announced that Harvard is now under Heightened Cash Monitoring (HCM).
This means the university must now spend its own money to fund student financial aid before it can receive reimbursement from the federal government a shift that introduces stricter oversight over how taxpayer funds are used.
Though students will still receive their federal aid, the arrangement places additional financial responsibility on the university.
The Department also demanded that Harvard provide a $36 million irrevocable letter of credit to serve as security for any possible future liabilities.
The decision comes after months of legal and ideological tensions between the federal government and Harvard.
A federal court recently ruled against the administration’s earlier decision to freeze over $2.6 billion in funding to the institution.
In its judgement, the court criticized the Department of Education for what it called an “ideologically driven” move disguised as a response to antisemitism concerns on campus.
Officials have accused Harvard and similar institutions of promoting divisive ideologies and failing to safeguard Jewish students during recent protests linked to the conflict in Gaza.
Harvard, however, has rejected these claims and maintained that it is being targeted for political reasons.
While the university did not issue a statement regarding the new restrictions, it confirmed that it had started recovering access to previously withheld funds.
The decision to place Harvard under financial scrutiny reflects a growing power struggle over who controls how universities operate especially concerning admissions, staffing, and academic policies.
