Previously, the dropbox system allowed eligible applicants, particularly those with a recent U.S. travel history, to submit their passports without interviews, significantly reducing wait times.
With this change, concerns have arisen over potential delays and disruptions, as visa appointment dates in Nigeria are already backlogged, in some cases stretching over a year.
The policy shift is expected to affect students, business travelers, and tourists who rely on timely visa processing.
The U.S. Embassy has not issued an official statement explaining the reason for the suspension.
However, some analysts believe it could be linked to former President Donald Trump’s restrictive immigration policies, which previously led to travel bans on Nigeria and other African nations.

Many Nigerians worry that the removal of the dropbox option will make visa processing more difficult, further straining U.S.-Nigeria travel and business relations.
