Speaking on behalf of the UNDP Resident Representative, Elsie Attafuah, an official of the organisation, Mathew Alao, said the agency remains committed to assisting the Federal Ministry of Regional Development in formulating an inclusive policy that reflects international best practices and responds to regional realities.
He explained that the initiative is aimed at ensuring that development strategies are designed around the specific needs of the people while promoting sustainable growth and stability.

According to him, the UNDP will continue to work closely with the North-East Development Commission and other stakeholders to support the review of existing development plans and ensure that communities across the six states of the region are adequately represented.
Alao added that the organisation also intends to attract funding and technical support that can drive infrastructure development, economic growth, and long-term peace in the region.
He noted that the goal is not only to strengthen development efforts but also to contribute to making the North-East one of the safest regions in the country.
Also speaking at the workshop, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Regional Development, Mary Ogbe, stressed the importance of effective implementation, noting that Nigeria has often struggled more with execution than policy formulation.
She expressed confidence that the proposed development framework would be implemented successfully and aligned with national development priorities.

Ogbe added that contributions from stakeholders across the various regions are being incorporated into the policy to ensure it reflects local realities and addresses critical issues such as insecurity and economic development.
Meanwhile, the Managing Director of the North-East Development Commission (NEDC), Mohammed Alkali, welcomed the UNDP’s support, describing the proposed policy as a significant step toward achieving coordinated and balanced regional development.
He said the North-East continues to face major socio-economic challenges, including high poverty levels, inadequate access to electricity, and the lingering effects of conflict.
According to him, the proposed framework provides an opportunity to address these challenges through a more strategic and integrated approach that places regional development at the centre of national planning.
