Lecturers at the University of Lagos have declared an indefinite strike following what they described as incomplete salary payments for January and February 2026.
The action was announced by the university’s chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) after an emergency meeting held on Tuesday, Eko Hot Blog reports.

In a communiqué jointly signed by the chapter chairperson, Idou Kehinde, and secretary, Adesina Arikawe, the union said the strike would begin on Wednesday and continue until the university authorities address their concerns.

According to the lecturers, the decision followed lengthy discussions over what they called significant deductions from their salaries in the last two months.
The union alleged that staff members received reduced pay in January. It claimed lecturers at the Akoka campus were not paid their Earned Academic Allowance (EAA), while those at the Idi-Araba campus did not receive both EAA and the Clinical Academic Training Allowance (CATA).
ASUU further accused the university management of again issuing incomplete salary payments for February without consulting the union.

The communiqué criticized the move, describing it as unacceptable and unfair to academic staff.
Citing an earlier resolution adopted by the union’s national leadership in May 2025, the UNILAG chapter said its members had unanimously agreed to reject the salary deductions.
As a result, lecturers resolved to suspend their teaching and other academic duties starting March 11, 2026, because their full salaries for January and February had not been paid as of March 9.
The union added that the strike would remain in place until the university settles the outstanding payments in full.
