Edwin and his wife, Juliet Okoronkwo, who both lived in the U.S. as permanent residents, tricked Americans by pretending to be a high-ranking U.S. military officer. They used stolen identities to make their scam look real.
Juliet was sentenced to 25 months in prison for helping with the scheme. She used phone calls to convince victims that their fake stories were true.
The couple convinced people to send them money through the postal service.
The statement explained, **”Edwin Okoronkwo, a Nigerian citizen and U.S. resident, and his wife, Juliet, who lived in Nebraska, used fake online identities to scam victims into sending them money. They pretended to be high-ranking U.S. military officers on missions abroad.
Many victims across the country sent money through the U.S. Postal Service, FedEx, and UPS.
Juliet also helped by calling victims and making the scam sound more believable. She even used her job at a hospital to steal personal details like Social Security numbers and driver’s license information.”**
