Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Obi explained that the visit was part of ongoing consultations around a proposed coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections and broader discussions on Nigeria’s future.

He said the engagement focused on building a more inclusive and functional country, stressing that the priority was national development rather than political ambition. According to him, the goal is to create a Nigeria where citizens can thrive based on merit and hard work, regardless of background or connections.
Obi added that Nigerians should expect a more united, secure and economically productive nation, noting his intention to shift the country from a consumption-driven economy to one centred on production and job creation.
Describing the nearly two-hour meeting as productive, Obi said it reflected a shared commitment with Makinde to pursue policies that would benefit all Nigerians.

He emphasised that discussions were ongoing with key stakeholders across political divides to advance national unity and progress.
The visit came shortly after Obi’s meeting with former President Goodluck Jonathan, signalling a series of high-level engagements tied to possible political realignments ahead of 2027.
It also followed a recent opposition summit held in Ibadan, where major political actors gathered to explore strategies for challenging the ruling party in the next general elections.
Prominent attendees included Atiku Abubakar, Rabiu Kwankwaso, Rauf Aregbesola, Rotimi Amaechi, Aminu Tambuwal and Liyel Imoke, among others.
The summit brought together leaders of multiple political parties and stakeholders, highlighting growing efforts to form alliances ahead of the 2027 elections.
