A group of Oyomesi (the kingmakers of Oyo) has  stated reasons they rejected Governor Seyi Makinde’s approval of Abimbola Owoade as the new Alaafin of Oyo.

EkoHotBlog earlier reported that On Friday, Governor Makinde announced Owoade’s appointment, but five out of the seven kingmakers are calling it illegal.

The Kingmakers who rejected Owoade’s  include Yusuf Akinade (Bashorun), Wakeel Akindele (Lagunna), Hamzat Yusuf (Akinniku), Wahab Oyetunji (representing Asipa), and Gbadebo Mufutau (representing Alapinni).

They claim they had already chosen another candidate, Prince Lukman Adelodun Gbadegesin, following the traditional rules in September 2022.

Their lawyer, Adekunle Sobaloju, wrote to the governor, explaining that Gbadegesin was selected by the majority of the kingmakers, and his name was sent to the governor for approval.

However, the governor did not approve him without giving a reason. The kingmakers have since taken legal action to stop the governor from interfering with the process, and the case is still in court.

The kingmakers argue that the governor had no right to organize a meeting with a few kingmakers and temporary chiefs on January 9, 2025, to appoint Owoade. They say this action goes against the Alaafin Chieftaincy Declaration of 1967, which outlines the traditional rules for selecting the Alaafin. They insist that only the Bashorun can summon a meeting to choose the next Alaafin.

They describe the governor’s actions as unlawful and a violation of the community’s traditions. The group is urging the people of Oyo to remain calm while they challenge the decision in court. They also advised the governor to step back and let the kingmakers handle the process according to tradition.
