In an effort to uncover the underlying causes of the widespread kidney disease affecting residents, a team of experts from the Biomedical Science Research and Training Centre (BioRTC), with support from the Yobe State government, has collected various samples including water, soil, vegetables, and fish in the Bade Local Government Area.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the research team, affiliated with Yobe State University and led by Dr. Mahmoud Bukar Maina, the Special Adviser on Science, Research, and Innovation, and Director of BioRTC, conducted the sample collection in the Gashu’a farmlands and other areas.

The samples will help in understanding the root causes of kidney disease in the region.
Dr. Maina explained, “As part of the research, the Environment Team will collect sand, water, vegetables, and other perishable foods produced in Gashu’a to identify potential factors contributing to kidney disease in Bade.”
Co-lead of the Environment Team, Dr. Usman Bawa, stated, “After fieldwork, we will apply advanced statistical analysis to examine the relationship between heavy metals or contaminants in these samples and the risk of kidney disease.”
Dr. Muhammad Lawan Gana, the Commissioner for Health and Human Services in Yobe State, visited the research team in Gashu’a to show support for the project. He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to finding a lasting solution to the kidney disease issue under the leadership of Governor Mai Mala Buni.
Gana expressed concern about the ongoing kidney failure problem in the area, saying, “Once the findings are complete, we will develop a comprehensive implementation plan to address this issue and improve the well-being of the people.” He also commended Governor Buni for prioritizing the health sector in the state.

Dr. Maina reported that the people of the Bade Emirate have been cooperative throughout the research process. Additionally, the Director of Primary Health Care in Bade, Yerima Sheriff Dalah, and Dr. Salamatu Ahmad Amshi confirmed significant progress in the collection of blood, urine, and other specimen samples for kidney function tests, genetic analysis, and heavy metals examination. The commissioner visited several sample collection sites to oversee the progress of the research.
