The samples will help in understanding the root causes of kidney disease in the region.

Dr. Maina explained, “As part of the research, the Environment Team will collect sand, water, vegetables, and other perishable foods produced in Gashu’a to identify potential factors contributing to kidney disease in Bade.”

Co-lead of the Environment Team, Dr. Usman Bawa, stated, “After fieldwork, we will apply advanced statistical analysis to examine the relationship between heavy metals or contaminants in these samples and the risk of kidney disease.”

Dr. Muhammad Lawan Gana, the Commissioner for Health and Human Services in Yobe State, visited the research team in Gashu’a to show support for the project. He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to finding a lasting solution to the kidney disease issue under the leadership of Governor Mai Mala Buni.
