This followed an intervention by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu during Tuesday’s plenary, after Abia lawmaker Obi Aguocha raised a point of order drawing attention to Kanu’s worsening health condition. Aguocha lamented that his letters to the House leadership and the Federal Government on the matter had not received a response.
Kanu, arrested in Kenya in 2021 and extradited to Nigeria, is facing terrorism and treasonable felony charges. He has remained in the custody of the Department of State Services since October 2015.
Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, however, asked Aguocha to step down his motion for proper presentation, noting that it was raised under the wrong procedure. Kalu intervened, assuring that the issue would be brought before the House later in the week, stressing that Kanu’s health concerns deserved due consideration.
Meanwhile, the Abia State House of Assembly has endorsed a peaceful rally in Abuja to demand Kanu’s release on medical grounds. During its plenary in Umuahia, lawmakers aligned with Governor Alex Otti and other South-East leaders to urge the Federal Government to grant the IPOB leader medical attention and eventual release.
Deputy Speaker Austin Mmeregini, who moved the motion, said Kanu’s prolonged detention had aggravated insecurity in the South-East. Other lawmakers, including Isiehi Boniface and Kalu Mba Nwoke, backed the call, urging greater advocacy from regional leaders and federal legislators.

Speaker Emmanuel Emeruwa condemned Kanu’s continued detention despite court orders for his release, describing it as “against the law and a violation of human rights.” He warned that it would be tragic for Kanu to die in custody.
