- ASUU branches to withdraw their services starting midnight on Monday
- Tinubu administration had already shown commitment by releasing N50 billion
- ASUU apparently viewed these concessions as insufficient
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) declared a two-week total and comprehensive warning strike across all public universities in Nigeria.
Eko Hot Blog gathered that the Union’s National President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, announced the decision at a press briefing held Sunday at the University of Abuja.

Piwuna stated that insufficient progress had been made to stop the union’s resolution to strike, which follows the expiry of the 14-day notice issued on September 28, 2025.

Consequently, he directed all ASUU branches to withdraw their services starting midnight on Monday, October 13, 2025. Piwuna emphasized that the warning strike will be “total and comprehensive.”
This latest standoff between university lecturers and the Federal Government occurs despite ongoing negotiations aimed at preventing another round of industrial action in tertiary institutions.
Just last Wednesday, the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, disclosed in Abuja that the government had reached the final phase of talks with ASUU and other unions to resolve long-standing disputes concerning welfare, funding, and implementing the 2009 ASUU-FGN Agreement.

Alausa noted that the Tinubu administration had already shown commitment by releasing N50 billion for the payment of Earned Academic Allowances.
Furthermore, the government captured an additional N150 billion in the 2025 budget for needs assessment, planning to disburse this amount in three tranches.
However, ASUU apparently viewed these concessions as insufficient to suspend the planned industrial action.
