EKO HOT BLOG reports that in a statement issued on Sunday, the spokesperson of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Abubakar Umar, declared all correctional facilities across the country as “Red Zones”, stressing that they remain restricted and inviolable.
Umar said the move became necessary following intelligence reports about planned disruptions during the protest. He stated that the Service, in collaboration with other security agencies, had put adequate measures in place to ensure the safety and security of all custodial centres.
“The public is hereby informed that all correctional centres are declared as RED ZONES. These are highly restricted areas, and anyone without official business therein should stay away to avoid any unfortunate incident or security breach,” the statement read.
He urged Nigerians to remain law-abiding and to cooperate with security operatives during the planned demonstration, noting that correctional centres are not protest grounds.
While assuring citizens of their safety, Umar appealed for calm and respect for restricted areas, warning that any attempt to violate or desecrate government custodial centres would attract serious consequences.
“The Nigerian Correctional Service urges all citizens to exercise caution and cooperate with security agencies to ensure a peaceful and safe environment for everyone. It is equally important to respect restricted areas such as correctional facilities,” he stated.
