The Federal University of Health Sciences, Ila-Orangun (FUHSI), Osun State, on Friday commissioned 11 major projects valued at over N7 billion, marking a significant milestone in the institution’s rapid development since its establishment.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the projects were inaugurated by the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, alongside the Chairman of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) Board of Trustees, Aminu Bello Masari, and former Osun State Governor, Chief Bisi Akande.

The commissioning ceremony, attended by political leaders, academics and traditional rulers, highlighted the Federal Government’s renewed focus on expanding medical education and strengthening Nigeria’s healthcare workforce.
FUHSI was established in 2021 and commenced academic activities in 2022 with an initial intake of 526 students. The institution has since grown steadily and is positioned as a key component of national efforts to train health professionals.
Speaking at the event, Alausa said President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda is driving a new phase of development in Nigeria’s education sector, particularly in health sciences. He noted that the administration is repositioning tertiary institutions as centres of excellence capable of contributing meaningfully to national development.
According to him, the National Education and Skills Roadmap Implementation (NESRI) is designed to enhance the relevance and global competitiveness of Nigerian institutions, with health sciences education identified as a critical pillar.
“Today’s commissioning reflects the kind of infrastructure investment NESRI seeks to replicate across the country,” the minister said.

The newly commissioned projects include the Senate Building, University Library, ICT Centre, Multidisciplinary Clinical Centre serving as the teaching hospital, College of Medicine Complex, research laboratories, Nursing Building, Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, internal road network, upgraded health centre and a campus electrification project.
Alausa said the investments demonstrate the government’s determination to expand medical training capacity and address the shortage of healthcare professionals in the country.
TETFund Chairman Aminu Bello Masari disclosed that the projects cost N7,050,368,736, funded from the N10.54 billion allocated to FUHSI between 2021 and 2024. He added that the university had accessed N9.4 billion so far, with N1.12 billion remaining.
“For us at TETFund, commissioning these projects signifies real progress toward making Nigerian institutions globally competitive,” Masari said, commending the university’s prudent utilisation of funds.
Vice-Chancellor of FUHSI, Prof. Akeem Lasisi, said the university currently runs 13 academic programmes with a total student population of 3,493, comprising 2,351 females and 1,142 males. He added that 453 students benefited from the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFund) scheme this year, receiving N130.25 million.
Lasisi also revealed that 9 academic programmes were accredited in 2024, with 4 more scheduled for accreditation in 2025, in line with the university’s goal of becoming a major health training hub and reducing medical tourism.
While appreciating government and community support, he appealed for assistance in securing alternative power sources, citing rising diesel costs as a major challenge as the campus expands.
Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, represented by the Commissioner for Education, Sunday Dipo Eluwole, reaffirmed the state government’s support for FUHSI, describing the institution as strategic to Osun State’s development agenda.
Several dignitaries attended the event, including the Director-General of NACA, Dr. Temitope Ilori; former Deputy Governor Benedict Alabi; the Orangun of Ila, Oba Abdulwahab Kayode Oyedotun; the Orangun of Oke-Ila, Oba Adedokun Abolarin; and senior academics from across the country.
