Lagos Unveils WASH Policy To Boost Water Access And Sanitation
Eko Hot Blog reports that Lagos State took a major step towards improving access to clean water and proper sanitation facilities on Thursday by unveiling its comprehensive Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) policy.
The policy’s launch was part of activities marking the 2024 World Water Day celebration held at Marriott Hotel, GRA, Ikeja.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, emphasized the vital role of water in sustaining life and fostering peace among communities. Reflecting on this year’s theme “Water for Peace,” the governor underscored water’s capacity to bridge divides between people.
“The launch of the Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) Policy of Lagos State will serve as a guiding framework in the journey towards ensuring universal access to clean water and sanitation,” Sanwo-Olu stated. He highlighted the policy’s holistic approach, encompassing strategies for conservation, pollution prevention, and equitable distribution of water resources.
The WASH policy implementation aligns with the state government’s commitment to leaving no one behind in the pursuit of water security and peace. Key focus areas include improving water infrastructure, enhancing sanitation services, and empowering local communities to take ownership of their water resources.
Sanwo-Olu applauded ongoing initiatives like the Lagos Urban Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (LUWASH) program, supported by USAID, which exemplifies the administration’s dedication to promoting urban water security through innovative interventions and partnerships.
The Special Adviser on Environment, Mr. Olakunle Rotimi-Akodu, emphasized the potential of equitable water resource management to address socioeconomic inequalities. He urged participants to commit to building a future where water unites rather than divides.

The Minister of Water Resources and Environment, Prof. Joseph Utsev, represented by Permanent Secretary Alhaji Shehu Shinkafi, acknowledged water as a fundamental human right and life-sustaining resource. However, he noted that access to clean water remains a luxury for many due to challenges like climate change and population growth.
Senior government officials, academia, and civil society experts attended the event, underscoring the importance of collaborative efforts in realizing Lagos’ vision for universal access to water and improved sanitation through the newly unveiled WASH policy.
