On Thursday afternoon, Chiemelie’s mother, Ezenwanyi, took her son and a middle-aged female client to the river for a spiritual cleansing session intended to prepare Chiemelie to inherit the family’s spiritual business.
During the ritual, eyewitnesses said Chiemelie suffered an epileptic seizure while Ezenwanyi was performing an exorcism using a native fowl.
Despite alerting Ezenwanyi, the spiritualist continued chanting incantations instead of assisting her son, who had fallen into the deep water.

It was the client who eventually raised the alarm, drawing the attention of neighbors who rescued Chiemelie’s body from the water.
Tragically, despite being alive when retrieved from the river, he ultimately succumbed to the incident’s effects.
“We found Ezenwanyi chanting while the client was crying helplessly. We managed to bring him out and rushed him to the hospital,” an eyewitness said.
Reports indicate that two hospitals initially refused to admit the victim, before a third hospital ultimately pronounced him dead.
In response to the incident, the Enugu State Police Command arrested Chiemelie’s mother and the Ogui Police Division carried out the arrest, as police spokesman Daniel Ndukwe had not yet commented on the situation at the time of this report.
