The summit brought together key stakeholders from across Nigeria’s coastal states to deliberate on strategies for safeguarding the nation’s maritime borders, protecting vulnerable coastal communities, advancing the blue economy, and tackling the growing impacts of climate change.
Declaring the event open, the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, His Excellency Pastor Umo Eno, stressed the need for unity of purpose and cross-border collaboration in tackling emerging threats.
“Nigeria’s coastal platforms are inextricably linked with neighbouring countries,” he said, warning that “if not properly managed through bilateral treaties or existing legal instruments, border issues may exacerbate tensions around our border communities.”
Hon. Isiaka Yusuf Olatunji, speaking on behalf of the Ibeju-Lekki delegation, commended the organisers for providing a platform to address pressing coastal challenges.
He reaffirmed the council’s readiness to key into policies that strengthen border security and improve the welfare of coastal residents.
“Ibeju-Lekki is a critical coastal area in Lagos State, and we understand the urgency of safeguarding our communities while unlocking the economic potential of our waters,” he said.
The importance of the summit is tied to deep national security implications and reinforces Nigeria’s commitment to bolstering coastal border management while promoting economic growth through maritime development.
Dignitaries in attendance included the Onibeju of Ibeju, Oba Waliu Olasunkanmi Razaq Oguntolu; the Onimedu of Orimedu, Oba Toheeb Yisa Abidemi Oyedele; the Surveyor General of Lagos State; and other notable personalities from both the public and private sectors.
