President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has mandated Vice President Kashim Shettima to head Nigeria’s delegation to the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), scheduled to hold in New York, United States, from Monday, September 22 to Sunday, September 28, 2025.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the development was confirmed in a statement issued on Saturday by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications (Office of the Vice President).
Shettima is expected to join world leaders for the commemoration of the UN’s 80th anniversary on September 22 at the UN headquarters in New York. He will also participate in the high-level general debates from September 23 to 28.
On behalf of President Tinubu, the Vice President will deliver Nigeria’s national statement on Wednesday, September 24, between 3:00 pm and 9:00 pm (New York time).
Shettima is also scheduled to attend a special Climate Summit for Heads of State and Government, convened by the UN Secretary-General on September 24. During this event, Nigeria will announce its new Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement, reaffirming its commitment to tackling global climate change.
Additionally, Shettima will participate in a high-level roundtable of the Global Champions on Adequate and Affordable Housing hosted by the Kenyan President, alongside other bilateral meetings and engagements with world leaders.
Following his UNGA engagements, the Vice President will proceed to Frankfurt, Germany, for a strategic meeting with officials of Deutsche Bank before returning to Nigeria.

The 80th UNGA is expected to attract global attention as leaders deliberate on pressing global issues, ranging from climate change and sustainable development to peace, security, and global economic reforms.
