The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has signaled a major overhaul in vehicle administration by rolling out a contactless biometric capture system for driver’s licence issuance.
Eko Hot Blog reports that this digital leap was announced at the launch of the 2025 Ember Months Road Safety Campaign in Abuja, which focuses on “Tech Responsibility for Your Safety: Stop Distracted Driving.”

Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed said the new system is designed to eliminate delays and the use of temporary documents. He stated that the printing facility has been upgraded to print an average of 15,000 driver’s licenses daily and that production would increase to clear the backlog before the second week of November 2025.

The new method allows for on-spot printing following the contactless biometric capture, which Mohammed called the “beginning of a digitalized one-stop-shop.” He assured the public that once an applicant is captured, they will get their driver’s licence instantly, making temporary licences a thing of the past.
The system is synchronized with the National Identification Number (NIN) database to ensure data consistency and seamless identity verification.

Adding to the news, Deputy Corps Marshal Aliyu Datsama confirmed that the initial 800,000 unprocessed driver’s licences backlog has been reduced to 400,000.
He pledged that by working 24/7, the remaining backlog will be cleared in the next few weeks, noting that the agency’s daily production capacity now stands at 40,000 licences. He urged Nigerians to check and collect the over 206,000 licences remaining unclaimed nationwide.
