The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has announced that all students applying for tertiary education will undergo drug screening to detect substance use early and prevent addiction among Nigerian youths.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the announcement was made at the agency’s Abuja headquarters following the reappointment of NDLEA Chairman Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (rtd.) for a second five-year term.

Marwa stated, “The Honourable Minister of Education has accepted our recommendation for drug tests for children entering tertiary institutions, so we can catch issues early before they progress into addiction.”

Marwa explained that this program is part of a broader strategy to prevent drug abuse while promoting legitimate alternatives for youths.
“We are supporting licit cultivation of crops that are legal and safe, so youths have productive options rather than turning to illicit drugs,” he said.
The chairman also reaffirmed NDLEA’s commitment to prevention, sensitisation, counselling, treatment, and rehabilitation, noting plans to expand rehab centres nationwide.

“With the support of the President and the Renewed Hope Agenda, seven more rehab centres will be established under the 2025 budget, ensuring every state has its own facility,” Marwa added.
He further warned drug traffickers that enforcement would be strict. “Those who refuse to desist should know the NDLEA is fully capable of law enforcement. Offenders will be arrested, drugs seized, and assets confiscated,” he said.
