The Federal Government on Wednesday cautioned that recent security-related remarks by United States President Donald Trump have inadvertently emboldened opportunistic violent groups seeking to exploit international narratives to launch renewed attacks on soft targets across Nigeria.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, issued the warning while addressing the evolving nature of violent extremism, Boko Haram and ISWAP insurgency, and banditry.

He explained that contrary to public assumptions, the earliest drivers of insurgency were economic motives and not religion.
Akume stated that Nigeria had significantly degraded insurgent activities before the latest wave of commentary from Washington. Although Trump’s statements may have been well-intentioned, the SGF said they have had “unintended consequences,” including emboldening extremist factions.
He stressed that what Nigeria requires from its global partners especially the United States is collaboration through intelligence sharing, advanced technology, and equipment support, rather than public labels that misrepresent the country’s security realities.

Akume firmly rejected claims of genocide against Christians, even in his home state of Benue, noting that Boko Haram and ISWAP have attacked both churches and mosques for years, killing Christians, Muslims, and traditional worshippers alike. He also clarified that violent actors in the North-West are driven primarily by economic interests.
According to him, the mischaracterisation of Nigeria’s security challenges as a religious genocide “fuels tension, emboldens violent groups, creates diplomatic friction, and undermines long-standing efforts to build strategic international partnerships.”
He reaffirmed that Nigeria is a secular nation whose constitution prohibits the adoption of any religion as state faith. President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet, he said, reflects national diversity, with a balanced representation of Christians and Muslims in both the Federal Executive Council and the National Security Council.
Akume traced the origins of the current security environment to the 2011 collapse of Libya and instability in Egypt, which opened illicit trafficking routes for extremist networks.
He noted that weapons smuggled through Al-Qaeda–linked corridors in the Sahel strengthened Boko Haram, ISWAP, and later armed banditry groups.
He also highlighted the economic triggers of banditry in the North-West, including land and water conflicts, cattle rustling, illegal mining, kidnapping-for-ransom, and extortion of rural communities.
Referencing the deadly Yelewata attack in Benue State between June 13 and 14 which independent rights organisations say claimed over 100 lives, Akume said President Tinubu promptly deployed relief materials and ordered an assessment of destroyed homes to enable reconstruction.
He emphasized that Nigeria’s military has reclaimed vast territories from insurgents and remains highly capable. What the country needs now, he maintained, is “strategic support, not foreign combat troops.”
Akume urged Nigerians across political, ethnic, and religious lines to unite in confronting violent extremism, adding: “Now is the time to speak with one strong and united voice to eradicate terrorists, bandits, and insurgents from our borders.”
He further reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening diplomatic relations with the United States based on mutual respect, shared democratic values, and a joint commitment to regional and global stability.
