Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has urged the people of Badagry to uphold and preserve the legacy of the late Akran of Badagry, Oba Babatunde Akran, De Wheno Aholu Menu-Toyi I, describing the monarch as a symbol of unity, peace, and cultural pride.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the governor made the call on Wednesday during the ninth day of spiritual prayers held in honour of the late monarch at the Akran’s Palace in Badagry.

The prayer session was attended by the Deputy Governor, Dr Obafemi Hamzat; members of the Lagos State Executive Council; serving and former public office holders; religious, traditional and political leaders; members of the royal family; and residents of Badagry.

Sanwo-Olu said the late Oba Akran’s 49-year reign was impactful and purposeful, noting that the monarch consistently promoted togetherness, unity, and peaceful coexistence throughout Badagry Kingdom.
He extended condolences to the people of Badagry and the royal family, describing it as an honour for him and members of his cabinet to represent the state government at the event.
The governor assured the community of the state government’s continued support for the late monarch’s family and pledged to fulfil all promises made to the people of Badagry.
According to him, the late Akran was a strong custodian of Badagry’s rich cultural heritage and traditions, urging residents to emulate the values he stood for to ensure lasting peace in the ancient town.
Sanwo-Olu also announced that construction of a new central palace in Badagry would commence immediately, adding that contractors have been directed to move to site without delay.
He further assured residents that the second phase of the Market General Hospital road construction to Ajido would soon begin.
The governor said his administration remains committed to infrastructural development in Badagry, citing ongoing investments in roads, hospitals, and schools, while reaffirming Badagry’s position as a centre of cultural pride and a major tourist destination.
Earlier, the Chairman of Badagry Local Government Area, Hon Babatunde Hunpe, described the late Oba Akran as more than a traditional ruler, portraying him as a unifying force and a consistent advocate for peace and development.
Hunpe said Badagry remained peaceful under the monarch’s leadership, where dialogue prevailed over conflict and the throne served as a rallying point for all, regardless of political, religious, or social differences.
He commended Governor Sanwo-Olu for attending the prayer session, describing his presence as a demonstration of leadership rooted in empathy, respect, and support for traditional institutions.
Also speaking, the Chairman of Olorunda Local Council Development Area, Hon Ajose Peter Kumayon, said the late monarch promoted cultural values while attracting growth and development to Badagry during his reign.
He described Oba Akran’s passing as a significant loss to Badagry, Lagos State, and Nigeria, noting that the monarch successfully blended tradition with modern progress for nearly 49 years.

Speaking on behalf of traditional rulers and chiefs, the Vice Chairman of the Badagry Local Government Council of Aholus and Obas, HRM Saheed Adamson, the Aholu of Ajido Kingdom, said the reign of the late Akran was characterised by wisdom and an unwavering commitment to unity and peace.
He added that the monarch played a key role in the approval of 4 traditional rulers in Badagry and ensured the effective reorganisation of grassroots traditional leadership structures.
