According to his mother, security personnel directed him to park on the fifth floor of the facility. However, he mistakenly drove through what seemed to be an exit route, reportedly due to unclear signage.
Surveillance footage reviewed by the family and law enforcement officials allegedly shows Obinna driving at a moderate speed before his vehicle went over the edge of the structure.
His mother raised concerns about conflicting statements from mall management, who allegedly claimed Obinna declined valet parking. This was disputed by a friend who was driving behind him at the time and confirmed that both were instructed to park their vehicles themselves.
The family also revealed that it took emergency responders over 30 minutes to extract Obinna from the wreckage. He was declared dead upon arrival at the hospital.

On Wednesday, July 2, the Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources sealed the mall pending a full investigation.
The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced that a specialized technical team has been appointed to evaluate the structural integrity of the building and determine whether negligence or safety lapses contributed to the tragic incident.
“The state government is resolute in ensuring that all public and commercial spaces adhere strictly to safety standards. Any breaches will be dealt with in line with existing regulations,” Wahab stated.
The incident has triggered broader discussions around safety standards in commercial properties throughout Lagos. Regulatory bodies are now expected to intensify the enforcement of building regulations and operational guidelines, potentially placing property developers and facility managers under increased scrutiny in the future.
Purple Mall is managed by Purple Group, an emerging real estate and lifestyle company that targets middle income consumers through its blend of retail and entertainment services.
